Road Transfer Program

Right-Sizing the State Highway System

 

Louisiana owns more than 27% of the state's public road mileage, while the national average is about 19%. Only nine states own a higher percentage of public road miles, and only ten have larger state highway systems. The Road Transfer Program provides an opportunity to reduce the amount of state owned public road mileage by right-sizing the highway system.

 

The goal is to strengthen local government by increasing autonomy while reducing the state’s role in maintaining certain roads. The program may appeal to parishes and municipalities with the capacity for day-to-day road maintenance but limited resources for capital improvements.

 

Participation in the program is voluntary. Local governments interested in participating should contact their DOTD District Administrator.  Maps showing transfer roads in each parish are grouped DOTD District. The maps and contact information can be found in the links below.
