MAP
DOTD assists motorists to improves traffic flow through its contracted Motorist Assistance Patrol service. MAP provides full traffic incident management for Louisiana. They responds to every incident by first protecting the scene and then providing services to remove incidents to allow traffic to flow freely again. Working along with the LADOTD Traffic Management Centers, MAP both reduces traffic congestion caused by crashes, stalled vehicles, debris, etc. and provides safety and comfort to those stranded and other first responders.
This is not a call out service. The Motorist Assistance Patrol runs specific routes and can provide you with the following free services.
- Provide one gallon of fuel
- Change a flat tire
- Jump start car
- Fill radiator with water
- Provide the use of a cellular phone so you can make a local call for additional assistance if needed.
Services are provided to motorists in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lake Charles, Shreveport-Bossier City, Alexandria and the Northshore.
Studies by the Federal Highway Administration estimate that an average of four minutes of traffic delay is created for every minute that a stalled vehicle is blocking a lane. Whether the MAP operator is providing a gallon of gas, fixing a flat tire, filling a radiator or charging a dead battery, the main goal is to restore the interstate to peak traffic capacity.
Much credit for the success of the program is due to the MAP operators, who must be qualified first responders, quick thinkers and customer-oriented. In addition to assisting with vehicle problems, these contracted employees are often the first to arrive at the scene of an accident and must calm motorists in times of high stress. Operators are also responsible for coordinating through radio dispatch the timely arrival of Emergency Medical Services, tow trucks, law enforcement and other service providers.
If you become stranded and need assistance from the Motorist Assistance Patrol, contact your local law enforcement. In an emergency situation, dial 911.
