ITS Programs and Projects
This section contains information on various DOTD ITS programs and projects for statewide and regional operations.
Connected and Autonomous Vehicles
DOTD ITS has identified the need to integrate our infrastructure with the evolving needs of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles. Through the CAV Working Group, we are committed to building a strong foundation of knowledge about CAV technology readiness in addition to policy and governance considerations to better inform DOTD ITS decision-making around CAV across different sections. This includes considering how CAV fits into DOTD ITS operational and management priorities.
ITS Deployment Plans
ITS provides its statewide and regional Deployment Plans (Architectures) for five-year cycles.
Motorist Assistance Patrol
DOTD assists motorists to improve traffic flow through its contracted Motorist Assistance Patrol service. MAP provides full traffic incident management for Louisiana. They respond to every incident by first protecting the scene and then providing services to remove incidents to allow traffic to flow freely again. Working in tandem with the LADOTD Traffic Management Centers, MAP both reduces traffic congestion caused by crashes, stalled vehicles, debris, etc. and provides safety and comfort to those stranded and other first responders.
Ramp Meters
Ramp metering is a proactive approach to traffic management designed to space out traffic entering the interstate. This helps to reduce congestion on the interstate and improves safety by lowering the numbers of crashes that occur at the ramps. The technology been used successfully in several other urban areas around the country for years.
Traffic Management Centers
Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has six Traffic Management Centers located throughout the state. The functions of the TMCs are to deliver traveler-focused and performance-driven services which facilitate reliable and safe movement of people and goods within Louisiana. Our TMCs work in conjunction with our Motorist Assistance Patrol program to help maximize roadway throughput and efficiency, minimize impacts of roadway incidents and assist incident and emergency response agencies and personnel.
