Cameron Ferry Operations
On September 25, 2025, with the concurrence of the Louisiana Transportation Authority,
the DOTD released a Notice of Intent for this project.
Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish
Project No. H.972598
Description:
The Cameron Ferry Service at the Calcasieu Ship Channel is currently operated and maintained by public owner, DOTD. The Cameron Ferry Service currently operates with one end-loading vessel built in 1964, the Cameron No. II. While operating with the Cameron No. II, the ferry service has faced operational challenges with reliable and consistent service due to required maintenance and dry-docking of the Cameron No. II, lack of available end-loading spare boats, and staffing challenges.
On August 25, 2025, DOTD received (on behalf of LTA) an unsolicited proposal for Cameron Ferry Service Operations from LabMar Ferry Services, LLC (LFS) along with a $10,000 unsolicited proposal fee. LFS concurrently submitted a copy of its unsolicited proposal to Affected Local Jurisdiction, Cameron Parish Police Jury, and the local port, Cameron Parish Port, Harbor, and Terminal District. LFS is currently the operator of the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority’s (RTA) ferry system. LFS operates and maintains the system, including assisting with the delivery of two new passenger ferries in 2020.
In response to the Unsolicited Proposal from LabMar Ferry Services, LLC, on Sept. 10, 2025, the Louisiana Transportation Authority Board voted to authorize DOTD on behalf of LTA to solicit competitive proposals for a minimum 90-day period.
