Safety Data & Analysis
Per LRS 32:398, DOTD is the repository for crash data. Crash data from crash reports are collected electronically from law enforcement agencies using the state's crash reporting software eCRASH and from other law enforcement agencies using third party software. The Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety at Louisiana State University manages the state’s crash data. CARTS compiles the crash data each night and updates each statistical report to ensure that the most up-to-date information is available online. A primary objective of CARTS is to gather, process, and report crash data statistics pertaining to the traffic safety activities in a timely fashion.
Safety data comprises more than just crash report data. Roadway, EMS, traffic counts, toxicology, and other sources are integrated to give a more complete picture. This allows for more advanced analyses and network screening to assist in identifying priority locations for safety study and treatment.
Traffic records and traffic safety data are important! Many agencies throughout the state use these crash data statistical reports to help form the decision-making basis for policy setting and project selection towards improving the safety of Louisiana's public roadways.
