Highway Inventory
The Highway Inventory Unit provides a clearinghouse and source for public road attribute data according to federal guidelines. Internal agency field collections, collaboration with local entities, and contracted services deliver data for annual Certified Road Mileage and Highway Performance Monitoring System Reports. This Unit develops and maintains the Public Road System, Functional Class System, National Highway System, State Highway Routing Number Systems and other authorization processes for the purpose of general administration of Public Roads in Louisiana.
State Highway Functional Classification
Federal Functional Classification is the system by which roads are grouped into functional systems according to the type of service and amount of traffic the facility carries. Federal Functional Classification is used to determine design standards of roads and determines Federal Aid funding eligibility. Federal Functional Classification is assigned to all public roads using federal guidelines and is approved by the Federal Highway Administration.

National Highway System
The National Highway System, or NHS, includes the Interstate Highway System as well as other roads important to the nation's economy, defense, and mobility. The NHS was developed by the Federal Department of Transportation in cooperation with the states, local officials, and metropolitan planning organizations.
Highway Performance Monitoring System
The Highway Performance Monitoring System, or HPMS, is a national level highway information system used to support a data-driven decision process within the Federal Highway Administration, the US Department of Transportation, and the United States Congress. It includes information on the extent, condition, performance, use, and operating characteristics of the nation’s highways.
Model Inventory of Roadway Elements
MIRE, the Model Inventory of Roadway Elements, is a federally recommended listing of roadway inventory and traffic elements critical to safety management. MIRE is intended as a guideline to help transportation agencies improve their data inventories to make better statewide data driven decisions.
