Houma Tunnel
The Houma Tunnel, located in Terrebonne Parish, is a single tube, bi-directional, dual-lane vehicular and pedestrian tunnel beneath the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway opened to traffic in 1961. The tunnel is approximately 960-ft long and is a reinforced concrete structure cast-in-place within temporary cofferdams constructed across the canal.
The tunnel has one lane of traffic in each direction, one pedestrian walkway and one overhead ventilation air duct above part of the walkway. Pedestrian access into the tunnel is provided via approach ramps and stairway structures located at the north side of each portal. The crown and walls of the tunnel are finished with reflective tile.
