Transportation Systems Management & Operations
TSMO evolved out of the need to address growing transportation problems in nontraditional ways. TSMO incorporates all the activities within a transportation agency that are focused on optimizing the transportation system's performance.
This includes making the most of existing infrastructure to address safety, congestion, and reliability concerns. According to the Federal Highway Administration, TSMO allows agencies to target the underlying operational causes of congestion and unreliable travel through innovative solutions that typically cost less and are quicker to implement than adding capacity.
TSMO provides new ways of doing and thinking, to provide the best service to our customers using the system we have.
The Benefits of TSMO are how we “win”. Rather than solely relying on building more roads and highways to alleviate congestion, TSMO focuses on optimizing the existing transportation infrastructure through operational strategies and partnerships. Partnerships that leverage resources to forge a network of roads into a world class transportation system, free of jurisdictional boundaries and focused on the users.
By implementing TSMO strategies, such as traffic signal coordination, incident management, and traveler information systems, DOTD can mitigate congestion by making it more predictable, enhancing safety in work zones, and providing real-time information to travelers. This way, road users can make informed decisions about their routes, leading to smoother traffic flow and improved overall travel experience.
