Freight and Passenger Rail
There are six Class-1 railroads in North America, and Louisiana is one of only three states in which all six operate. These are large, long-distance railroads. Short Line Railroads are the smaller railroads providing the “first/last mile” service between the Class-1 railroad lines and industries across the state. There are fourteen short line railroads operating in Louisiana.
The below map depicts Louisiana's freight rail network.
Additionally, Amtrak operates three long-distance passenger routes that connect Louisiana to the East Coast, West Coast and central regions of the country.
