Avondale Rail Crossing Grade Separation Study Documents

DOTD, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission and the railroads operating in the New Orleans metropolitan area are further evaluating consolidating the George Street at-grade crossing and the road-over-rail grade separation of Willswood Lane and Avondale Garden Road identified in DOTDs 2025 Avondale Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study. Three Build Alternatives were recommended for further study, one alternative for the Avondale Garden Road at-grade crossing and two alternatives for the Willswood Lane at-grade crossing. The Live Oak Boulevard at-grade crossing was eliminated from further study because the crossing did not meet FHWA criteria for consolidation or grade separation.

An October 27, 2026, open house public scoping meeting will be held at the J.C. Simmons Community Center in Westwego from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. The meeting will provide an opportunity to review a presentation of the completed Avondale Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study and the next phase of study, view exhibits, speak with DOTD and Study Team representatives, provide comments, and be added to the study mailing list to receive future notices.

Comment forms received at the meeting or post-marked/emailed no later than November 10, 2026, will be included in the public record.
