Interstate Lighting Program
Purpose: To replace existing roadway lighting systems and provide new roadway lighting systems on the Interstate routes in Louisiana. To provide design and construction in accordance with the Design Guidelines set by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Illuminating Engineering Society, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and other applicable Standards.
Funding: The Federal Highway Administration provides 90% for the construction of projects with a 10% Local match.
Program Years: Projects are programmed on a first come first served basis. The following factors are taken into consideration for a new request: Age and condition of existing lighting, past maintenance performance on existing systems, and availability of funding. On a regular basis, the program is reviewed and a determination is made to add additional projects.
Participation: All local governing entities are eligible to participate in the program. To qualify for participation, the local entity must provide an adopted Resolution and 10% of the construction cost, and must sign a Lighting Agreement with DOTD. The entity must assume ownership of the lighting system and be responsible for all maintenance and operating costs associated with it. For details, refer to A Guide to Constructing, Operating, and Maintaining Highway Lighting Systems.
